  • 3/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 3/4 cup light brown sugar firmly packed
  • 3/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground ginger
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground cloves
  • 1/4 teaspoon allspice

  • 1/8 teaspoon ground black pepper
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour

Equipment

  • 9x13-inch baking dish

Method

  1. Preheat oven to 375 degrees F. Lightly grease a 9x13-inch baking dish.

  5. In a large bowl, combine the oats, both sugars, spices, and flour. Add in the cubed butter and, using two forks or a pastry blender, cut the butter into the dry ingredients until mixture resembles a coarse meal.
  6. Sprinkle the topping evenly over the apples.
  7. Place the pan in the oven and bake for 45 to 50 minutes, or until the top is golden brown and the apples are bubbling.
  8. Remove from the oven and place the pan on a cooling rack. Serve warm. Serve with ice cream if desired.
